WA Police’s restrictive driving policies need tweaking after union claims the laws not only limited policing in regional areas but endangered the lives of officers.

The restrictive driving policies were brought in to limit the amount of crashes in police pursuits.

Recent footage from a security camera in Kununurra shows a police car being chased as a target in pursuit.

WA Police Deputy Commissioner Col Blanch defended the policy while Police Union president Mick Kelly told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the lives of officers tackling a crime spree in the Kimberley were at risk from the restrictive rules.

“This sort of behaviour where these offenders are picking high powered vehicles and chasing our members has been going on since September last year,” Mr Kelly said.
