WA Police Union calling on changes to restrictive driving policies

The WA Police Union is calling on the WA Police Force to rethink its restrictive driving policies after it claims the laws not only limits policing in regional areas, but also endangers the safety of Union members.

Footage from a security camera in Kununurra shows a police car being chased as a target in pursuit.

WA Police Union President, Mick Kelly, says he couldn’t believe what the footage shows.

“Sadly this incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday isn’t isolated,” he said. “This sort of behaviour where these offenders are picking high powered vehicles and chasing our members has been going on since September last year.”

The restrictive driving policies were brought in to limit the amount of crashes in police pursuits.

Mr Kelly told Oliver Peterson he is calling on the Police Commissioner Chris Dawson to make some changes to the policy.

“One policy for the whole of the state doesn’t fit,” he said.
