Famed West Australian author Tim Winton says he was “surprised” after earning an Order of Australia commendation during this year’s King’s Birthday honours.

Mr Winton told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings he recognises it’s a big deal for someone who grew up “in state housing in Karrinyup” and built their career in WA.

“I had this sort of stubborn determination to stay and fight, and I think staying here and telling WA stories was part of my formation,” Mr Winton said.
