WA government lambasted over new AFL exemptions

The inconsistencies of the WA government’s COVID restrictions have again been criticised after interstate athletes were given permission to enter the state without having had their third booster jab.

6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett said it was shambolic that sporting stars were given preferential treatment over ordinary West Australians, two years into the pandemic.

“I do have a level of incredulity about the McGowan government, yet another inconsistency and clear case of double standards in the way they’re running the COVID rules for West Australians,” he said on Mornings on Wednesday.

“Now it turns out that professional interstate athletes, like the AFL players coming to Optus Stadium on Sunday, and cricket players and the like, will now be allowed into WA without having their booster jab.

“Don’t you recall how the Premier [Mark McGowan] chose to break his promise and not reopen the state’s borders on February 5, when he said two jabs was not enough?

“Now we’re letting people in, not on the basis of what’s safe for the community, but on their sporting ability, again.

“And there are people in the eastern states still trying to get G2G passes and not being able to get exemptions because they’re not triple jabbed.

“You can come if you’re double jabbed from overseas into Perth, that’s another story.”

The AFL season kicks off this afternoon, with Gold Coast to play West Coast at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
