Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, has been used to relieve pain for over a century, but scientists are now studying the possibility of the gas helping with depression.

Professor Jayashri Kulkarni, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Monash University, explained to 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that the studies are very preliminary but show encouraging results.

“We found that infact giving nitrous oxide was actually a really good kick start to improving depression significantly,” she said.
