‘It’s got to end now’: Teachers union demand government scrap wage cap

The teachers union is calling for a four per cent wage rise over two years and the abolishment of the public sector wage cap.
Teachers have had their wages capped at a $1000 increase for the last four years, after the government said it was needed to repair the state’s budget.
The union has also warned that the sector faces a critical shortage of teachers, especially in regional schools.
Vice President State School Teachers Union Matt Jarman said it’s time the wage cap was gone.
“It’s got to end now Liam,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“The wages cap was something that we accepted when the fiscal challenges of the state government came into play almost four years ago … we accepted that, the government has repaired the budget now, we applaud the state government for doing that.
“But it is now time to reduce the pay stress on our members … regionally and in the metropolitan area.”
