‘It makes no sense’: Mysteries surround purchase of South Fremantle Power Station

Questions continue to be asked concerning the purchase of the South Fremantle Power Station based in North Coogee with the latest announcement that a buyer has been chosen.

Liam Bartlett explained on 6PR Mornings that the government initially stated that they would announce the successful private buyer in September 2021. Now Synergy has picked a preferred partner but refuses to name the party.

The power station in North Coogee operated between 1951 and 1985.

The six-hectare site is currently owned by the State Government, with the building itself being heritage listed in 1997.

“Following the closure of the expression of interest process, Synergy has entered into a conditional agreement with a party with respect to the sale of the South Fremantle Power Station,” a spokesperson from Synergy said.

“At this stage of the sale process, the details of the conditional agreement are commercial in confidence.”

The WA Shadow Minister for Energy, David Honey, told Liam Bartlett that it’s disturbing to see the lack of transparency towards the State’s property deals.

“It’s a taxpayer asset. The public owns this site, and more than that, it’s an iconic site, and we want to make sure it’s being developed in the best possible way,” the leader of the Opposition said.

“I can’t understand why they wouldn’t release the information that you’ve requested. It makes no sense. That is not commercial information. That’s just simply information that the public of Western Australia should be given.”
