India’s batsmen upstaged a brilliant century to Shane Watson as Australia lost the Twenty20 series 3-0.

The crowd of 34,527 at the Sydney Cricket Ground was treated to a thrilling finish to the international summer as India scored a seven-wicket win.

Set 198, the Indians needed 17 off the last over to win and two from the final ball.

Suresh Raina, who should have been stumped the second ball he faced, carved Andrew Tye over cover to the boundary to seal a series clean sweep for India.

Raina (49 not out from 25 balls) and Yuvraj Singh (15 not out from 12 balls) steered their side home after the run chase was set up by Rohit Sharma 52 (off 38 balls), Shikhar Dhawan 26 (off 8 balls) and Virat Kohli (50 off 36 balls).

India lost just nine wickets for the series.

Kohli was dismissed for the first time in the series when he edged a delivery from leg-spinner Cameron Boyce (2-28 off four overs) and it rolled back onto his stumps.

Watson, who replaced the injured Aaron Finch as captain for the game, scored an unbeaten 124 from 71 balls with 10 boundaries and six sixes.

His previous best in T20I for Australia was 81 against Pakistan in the 2010 World Cup.

Watson became the second Australian to score a T20 international century – after Finch – and the first to reach three figures in all three formats.

His score is also now the highest by a captain in T20I, passing the 119 made by South Africa’s Faf de Plessis against the West Indies in Johannesburg a year ago.

Watson combined with youngster Travis Head (26 off 19 balls) for a 93-run stand, a new fourth wicket record for Australia in T20I.

Watson also claimed 1-30 from his four overs at the bowling crease.
