Ian Chappell’s plan to get Renshaw and Bancroft in the same Test XI

Cameron Bancroft is making an impression on his Test debut.

Australia’s newest opening batsman made 82* as Australia won the first Ashes Test bu 10 wickets.

But Ian Chappell says the man he replaced, Matt Renshaw, isn’t done at Test level.

Chappelli told Macquarie Cricket that Bancroft could still bat at No.3.

“I’m sure Renshaw will come again – he’s only 21 and he’s a good player,” Chappelli said.

“I thought Renshaw was unlucky to be omitted. He hadn’t failed at Test level.

“Bancroft looks a very good player… you could maybe think about Renshaw opening (with Dave Warner) and Bancroft batting at three.”

Former England spinner John Emburey was also full of praise for Bancroft’s debut.

“He looks very solid, a very impressive player,” Embers said.

“He plays very straight, and that sends a message to the bowler… that ‘you’ve got to get past this defence’.”
