Queensland Senator Matt Canavan says he doesn’t support a policy of net-zero emissions by 2050, arguing such a move would “weaken Australia” and give a “free-kick to China”.

It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison enters into intense negotiations with the Nationals in an attempt to get them to agree to the move.

The federal government wants to finalise its position and a policy in relation to climate change and emissions before the Glasgow climate summit later this month.

“The west signing up to net-zero emissions would just be a free kick to China,” the Senator told Jane Marwick, filling in for Liam Bartlett, on 6PR Mornings.

“they’re not going to reduce their emission, president Xi Jinping is not even going to this Glasgow talk fest in a couple of weeks time.”
