The fact that Barbie has absolutely smashed recent box office records has forced many to acknowledge it has probably breathed new and much-needed life into the suffering cinema industry.

With predictions the Greta Gerwig-produced film could earn US $110 million in its first weekend, many are hoping it speaks of a public yearning to return to the movie theatre.

Moving Story Entertainment’s Marketing Manager and movie buff Jaymes Durant told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings audiences have taken the probably now-iconic film to heart.

“It’s sort of a postmodern critique of Barbie itself; it takes the mickey out of Barbie, but it also goes deep into what it means to be a woman in society,” Mr Durant said.
