Gareth Parker: We need to reset our ‘moral compass’

Gareth Parker says the state government’s “singular focus” when it comes to COVID-19 is destroying people’s lives.
It comes after Kathy, a 69-year-old woman, was seriously bashed and her car stolen while waiting for a COVID test at Royal Perth Hospital over the weekend.
After recovering for two days in hospital, she was discharged but told she would have to isolate for a further four hours at home due to her mandatory quarantine time having not finished.
Premier Mark McGowan said it was “very, very difficult” situation for her, but added “decisions have to be made to keep the public and the state safe” when asked about the incident at a press conference on Thursday.
“I still think that the monomaniacal focus, this kind of singular focus on one issue to the exclusion of all others, and the inability to process risk has just left a whole lot of people as basically road-kill on the side of the road,” Gareth Parker said.
“And Kathy is sadly one of them.
“And we urgently need to recalibrate all of this. Urgently. As a society, we need to figure out where on earth we are going, and treat people better.”
