The cost and quality of the food and drink at sporting events is keeping a worrying amount of fans away from the gates, according to new statistics.

AFL Fans Association President Ron Issko told Karl and Mick he was “shocked” to learn just how many people either smuggle their own food and drink into venues, or avoid it altogether.

“There has been some improvement in options, but I’m shocked to heart about the extent,” Mr Issko said.

“Even if there is record attendances at the footy this year, cost-of-living pressure are a probably a big cause, and there’s a big opportunity there.”
