In 2023, the state government set an ambitious target to slash emissions by 80 per cent by 2030, from the levels recorded in 2020.

Executive Director of Institute of Public Affairs Scott Hargreave told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the emissions goal is, ‘unachievable at any cost.’

‘There’s severe engineering problems with the whole concept of going to that level of renewables, closing down all your baseload coal-fired energy and certainly there’s a $52 billion black hole, in what it would take to even try and get there.”

“I would say to the new Premier, because he’s inherited this plan, pause [and] take a very good look.” Mr Hargreave said.
