E-scooters create a new “wild-west” for pedestrian footpaths

The safety concerns of e-scooter riders continues to grow, with more terrifying stories of injuries and accidents on our shared footpaths.
Harold Scruby, CEO of Pedestrian Council of Australia, told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that our footpaths have never been this unsafe.
“In 2000 years since we started developing footpaths, which had a primary objective of keeping pedestrians safe from vehicles, we’ve now turned that around by inviting vehicles to share the footpath with us,” he told Oly.
“No one has ever shown any studies that prove these things are anything but toys, they can now do up to 100km an hour on eight inch wheels.”
Mr Scruby further told the story of a woman in her 70’s who got hit by an e-scooter on a footpath in Adelaide. She is now facing $32,000 in medical bills.
“What’s happening to our Governments? When they say to all the pedestrians in Australia, ‘look these are far more important than your safety.”
