A surge of Monkeypox cases worldwide has let the governing health body, the World Health Organisation, declare a global emergency.

The chief of the WHO said the expanding monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries is an “extraordinary” situation that now qualifies as a global emergency.

A declaration that could spur further investment in treating the once-rare disease and worsen the scramble for scarce vaccines.

Dr Nick Coatsworth, Infectious Diseases Physician and former National Deputy Chief Medical Officer, told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings that the disease is of international concern.

“The key issue is they’re asking for concerted international action for disease control, and that means a lot of sharing of information,” he explained.

“It’s really a suggestion that this is a global problem,

“And can present an issue to us in Australia.”

Press PLAY to hear how Dr Coatsworth thinks this will affect Australia’s response to the virus and how you can catch the disease.
