WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson has told 6PR Breakfast he wishes his officers did not have to enforce the government’s strict COVID mandates and emergency management and public health act directions.

The state’s top cop told Gareth Parker recent police responses to high-profile incidents at a local parish in Glendalough last Thursday and an Italian restaurant in Warwick on Tuesday were not the norm but necessary to “protect the community”.

“Nope, don’t want to be doing this at all. It’s different mode of policing, one that no one wants,” Mr Dawson told the program.

Topolinis Caffe in Warwick reopened at 5pm on Tuesday after its co-owner and her daughter were arrested the night before due to staff being unvaccinated and unwilling to check the vaccination status of customers.

Police were also criticised for interrupting a church service in Glendalough last Thursday, after receiving complaints some parishioners were not wearing masks.
