David Mundy on player-fan interaction
A spectator has been banned from attending AFL games until the end of the 2024 season after making contact with Richmond midfielder Marlion Pickett.
David Mundy explored the issue of player-fan interaction on Monday night’s Wide World of Sports program after the penalty was announced.
“In terms of having some sort of ban, I don’t mind it.”
“I think fan engagement in-game creates energy and hype, it’s a very valued part of our game, when it’s player-driven.”

The incident occurred just before the three-quarter-time siren where the spectator leaned over the fence and placed his hands on Pickett’s back.
“When it’s unanticipated and unexpected contact, it can be an intimidating experience.”
“I think we need to be careful about unknown and unsolicited engagement in any sport.”
“I think the penalty is about right. I like that they haven’t named and shamed the individual and it’s more just a reflection on the behaviour.”
