Australia’s birdwatching community is in a flutter after a species of bird that normally calls Russia home was spotted on Australian soil for the first time.

Bird enthusiasts have photographed a Siberian Rubythroat on Christmas Island.

Birdlife Australia’s National Public Affairs Manager Sean Dooley told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the recent heavy storms and cyclones likely knocked the birds off-course.

“This will be about the 25th new bird for Australia seen on Christmas Island,” Mr Dooley said.
