There are calls for state governments to offer financial support to young drivers who need it.

The director of Driving Solutions said financial pressures force some young drivers to buy old, unsafe used cars, putting their safety at risk.

Driving Solutions director James Stewart told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons governments should help young drivers  buy safe cars.

“We’re giving our most inexperienced drivers probably the worst cars they’ll drive during their lifetime when they have no experience,” said Mr Stewart.
