Business News senior journalist Gary Adshead questioned the Cook government’s financial responsibility, noting that despite the government being flush with money thanks to GST and royalties, state debt is still forecast to peak at $44.6 billion in 2028-29.

Adshead told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that the racetrack could be a millstone around the state government’s neck come election time.

“Are we going to hit a point in three years’ time or two years’ time where people are saying, ‘Holy crap, it’s got worse and worse, and worse the cost of living, and they are still going ahead with the racetrack,” he said.
