Recent controversies in the AFL have reignited debates over player culture, raising questions about whether clubs are genuinely committed to substantive change or merely managing public perception.

University of Sydney academic Professor Catherine Lumby, who has previously advised the NRL on addressing gender and consent, told 6PR Mornings host Chrissie Morrissy that the country faced a significant issue with sexual harassment, assault and gendered violence.

She emphasised that education had to be open and realistically supported by genuine research.

“I don’t think we should assume that all young men know what the right thing to do is. I think they need to be given an opportunity to learn in well-structured education programs that are not judging, but which are open”, she said.
