Angus Taylor says net-zero plan ‘respects peoples choices’

Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor has defended the government’s plan to bring down emissions, saying it “respects peoples choices”.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Tuesday that Australia will sign on to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, a plan he will take to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow next month.

“This is the fundamental point,” the Minister told Mark Gibson on 6PR Breakfast it came down.

“There’s two ways to get emissions down.

“One is to force Australians to buy a technology they wouldn’t otherwise buy, that’s a cost … usually in the form of the carbon tax.

“The other way to do it is to bring down the cost of these low-emissions technologies, and people choose them because it’s good for them.”
