Greens call for government-run supermarkets to challenge duopoly
The Greens’ official think tank has advocated for converting hundreds of Coles and Woolworths stores into public supermarkets to offer essential goods at lower costs and disrupt the existing duopoly.

Scott Phillips, chief investment officer at The Motley Fool Australia, told 6PR Drive host Mark Doran that the retail giants already engage in fierce competition.
“For all of the talk about these horrible supermarkets that are killing us with price and all that kind of stuff … In the supermarket space Coles and Woolies absolutely go at each other hammer and tong to try and beat each other’s sales growth, to beat each other’s profit growth,” he said.
“This is not a cosy duopoly where consumers are paying the price.”
