Sydney Institute of Marine Science’s Clive McMahon told 6PR Mornings host Chrissy Morrissy that micro-oceanographic sensors on the shells help measure the temperature and conductivity below the ocean surface.

“That helps us get an idea of what the heat content and the density of the water is and these are essential elements that we need to help us forecast storm and tropical cyclone formation and strength”, he said.
