While the successful launch of live facial recognition cameras has led to multiple arrests and proven the value of new technology, there is still pressure for a visible police presence across WA.

Western Australian Police Union President Simone Taplin told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that while police recruitment is important, the force must focus on retention, pointing to the high number of retirements and resignations over recent months as a major concern.

“We’ve had at least 50 retirements and 80 resignations in the last few months, so replenishing those and actually remunerating our police officers to make sure that they are career police officers is something that we need to look at,” she said.”
