EXCLUSIVE: WA timber industry faces uncertainty as harvesting contractors idle amid logging ban talks

Jamie Burnett

Timber harvesting contractors are receiving compensation for idle periods as the state government deliberates on ‘ecological thinning’ amidst discussions about a logging ban.

Former Director of WA Forests Products Commission Gavin Butcher joined Oliver Peterson on Perth Live to discuss the current state of the timber industry.

“There’s been promises from the minister and the Premier that this wasn’t the end of the industry it was a change towards ecological thinning, but nobody knows anything, there’s no plans, there’s nothing published, it’s a basically void,” Mr Butcher said.

“Ultimately, there was no science. In the end the Minister for Environment admitted that in Parliament, he wouldn’t table any reports because essentially there weren’t any.”
