Zero applications for Kimberley cafe job

Article image for Zero applications for Kimberley cafe job

Kununurra eatery Cornerside Cafe has been looking for a barista for nearly three months. They have advertised in multiple ways with no bites from job applicants and the attractive JobSeeker payment and lack of overseas travellers is being blamed.

Owner and chef Rick Dyson told Oliver Peterson they are now looking at closing three days a week due to the staff shortage.

“We’ve only got two staff on and it’s just not enough to keep up with the demand of people.

“I would hate for people to get bad service just because we can’t keep up.”

Mr Dyson said other cafes are facing a similar situation with at least five others in town looking for staff.

“It’s the same situation.

“They can’t get staff to work, so they’re having to reduce the hours, reduce the menus and reduce the numbers of customers.”

He adds this job could be a great opportunity for someone to make the move north with standard working hours and excellent conditions.

“It’s a great lifestyle up here,” said Mr Dyson.
