‘You’re on notice’: Michaelia Cash says new legislation sends stern warning to social media giants

Article image for ‘You’re on notice’: Michaelia Cash says new legislation sends stern warning to social media giants

Federal Attorney-General Michaelia Cash says social media giants and anonymous trolls will be put “on notice” by new laws set to be introduced to parliament.

The legislation will label social media companies as publishers for defamatory comments made on their platform instead of the owners of that page.

It will require them to identify any user that has made a defamatory comment if that case ends up in court and has been made in Australia.

“For far too long, trolls, bots and bigots have flourished online behind a digital curtain of anonymity,” Senator Cash said on 6PR Breakfast.

“That is just an absolute disgrace, and what we’re saying to both the social media companies and the anonymous trolls are ‘you’re on notice’ you will be named and you will be held to account for what you say online.”
