Year 12 students fight to overturn school ball cancellation

Canning Vale College students are petitioning to overturn a decision from staff to cancel their Year 12 school ball in a month.
“The event that will be attended by the same students who spend every weekday together and some teaching staff, event and hospitality staff who are all required to be double vaccinated to work anyway,” part of their petition says.
One parent from the school, Tracey, told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the decision had rocked the students, who had already endured a tough few years.
“They were really looking forward to having something positive in their lives, something to smile about, something they’ve been looking forward to a long time,” she said.
Education Minister Sue Ellery confirmed to Parker that school balls were permitted under WA’s strict COVID rules and could go ahead.
“Special-one off events are allowed as long as they follow the venue’s rules with vaccinations and masks,” she said.
In a notice to parents, the school said it could not guarantee the safety of anyone at the event.
“We considered postponing the ball however we feel that any date scheduled for the future will be just as problematic and may result in causing further distress if cancelled at a later date,” it said.
“We know that the School Ball is an important event for many of our year 12s, however we need to feel confident that we are able to run this event and ensure our students and our staff are not exposed to any unnecessary health risks.”
