While there are strict laws regulating the testing of cosmetics on animals, there is little regulation on testing medications on animals.

It was estimated one US biotechnology company killed 1,500 animals since 2018 from failed testing.

Lecturer in bioethics at Monash University Julian Koplin told 6PR Mornings there is a moral debate about animal experimentation.

“There’s still this lingering question… how do we work out when the benefits are morally worth the pain and suffering of animals,” said Mr Koplin.
