A blaze at Viva Energy’s oil refinery in Geelong was caused by an equipment failure, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

Press PLAY to hear Kevin Morrison discuss the impact on the national fuel supply.

The refinery is critical to national supply, providing half of Victoria’s fuel and 10 per cent of the nation’s petrol and diesel needs.

Kevin Morrison, an energy analyst from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, explained to 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that the refinery will now have to import more petrol to cover the losses.

“It just couldn’t come at a worse time, when we’re facing the biggest fuel crisis this country has ever seen, to have its biggest refinery go offline is just the worst possible timing,” he said.
