Will Smith refused to leave Oscars, the Academy claims

The Academy has revealed actor Will Smith refused to leave the Oscars ceremony after striking comedian Chris Rock.
The show was derailed when a furious Smith stormed the stage to strike Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head.
In a statement released today, the Academy revealed Smith was asked to leave following the incident but refused.
“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognise we could have handled the situation differently.”
The Academy has apologised to Rock, nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired.
A board meeting on April 18 may see the Academy take disciplinary action, which could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the mood on the matter had definitely changed.
“People now are openly angry about it and want something done,” Ford said.
