Nine News Perth and 6PR sports presenter Paddy Sweeney and Breakfast host Gareth Parker say tennis star Ash Barty’s shock retirement from the sport has rocked her fans because they were not expecting it.

The world no.1 made the shock announcement on social media, sending her fans and fellow tennis rivals into a spin.

“I think this is the mystery and why this story is so captivating… we feel as though as we own a part of Ash Barty, she’s taken us on just a wonderful journey,” Sweeney told Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

Barty will hold a press conference later today to discuss her decision and future plans.
