The state has tallied a record 9782 daily coronavirus cases, less than a week after the majority of COVID-19 mandates were eased.

The number of people in hospital with the virus dropped slightly to 242 in the 24 hours to 8pm Tuesday, with 10 of those in ICU.

Two historical deaths – a woman in her 90s and a man in his 70s – were also recorded, dating back to April 12.

Wednesday’s case numbers are the highest since April 21, when 9314 infections were recorded, and exceeds the previous high of 9754 on March 30.

There were 13,501 PCR tests completed on Tuesday, with 30 per cent (4004) returning a positive result.
