WA Police were given repeated warnings a publicity stunt with a high-powered rifle posed a significant air danger risk, according to internal memos.

A Freedom of Information Act exposed how the SAS, RAAF and police themselves warned the live-fire demonstration would require RAAF Base Pearce to shut down.

Reporter Charles Miranda told 6PR Breakfast the firearm was purchased by the state government from an online source, not long after the government’s own gun buyback program.

A WA Police spokesperson said the rifle was purchased for $8500, and the weapon was being used for test firings and forensic comparisons.

“All of the issues were addressed with mitigation strategies suggested by a subject matter expert in the use of these types of weapons and ranges, including a direct line of communications with RAAF Pearce for the duration of the demonstration,” the spokesperson said.
