WA man avoids death penalty in Bali for smuggling heroin and meth

Jeffrey Welton, a 52-year-old surfing and diving instructor from Western Australia, has avoided facing the death penalty in Indonesia and will instead spent eight months in a rehabilitation facility, after a judge on the island accepted that he was an addict and not a drug trafficker.
Mr Welton was arrested in September 2022 after being discovered smuggling eight grams of heroin and 0.34 grams of methamphetamine on a flight from Vietnam.
“I mean you don’t often see this story come out of Indonesia do you?” Karl said onĀ 6PR Breakfast.
