Three days after a fatal shark attack just 15 metres from the shore at Sorrento Beach, beaches in Perth’s northern suburbs have re-opened.

Greg O’Neill, 63, was killed in the incident on Friday.

Trevor Whittington former Chief of Staff to the WA Minister for Fisheries told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that Western Australia has become the world’s shark death capital.

“Up until around 2000, we were averaging one fatal attack every decade. It’s now jumped to on average one a year, and it’s increasing”, Whittington said.

Beaumont spoke earlier to DPIRD deputy director-general Vaughn Davies about what steps are taken following the tragic incident.

“We need to consider whether we can clearly identify which shark was involved in the incident, where it is, and whether it’s an immediate threat to safety”, Davies said.
