Western Australia’s daily COVID-19 case numbers have continued to rise, with more than 8000 new cases announced on Wednesday.

WA Health reported a total of 8,429 new cases overnight, bring the total number of active cases to 40,695, and also announced a man in his 90s had died with the virus.

There are now 194 people with COVID-19 in hospital, and nine are in intensive care. The man in his 90s died on Monday, but the death was reported to WA Health on Tuesday.

Testing figures have remained consistent over the past few days, with a total of 17,552 PCR tests conducted at either state-run or private clinics on Tuesday.

Although cases declined over the weekend, similar to dates predicted for the peak in case numbers in the state government’s modelling, testing rates were also much lower, with just 10,661 PCR tests performed on Saturday.

Curtin University epidemiologist Archie Clements claimed the agency’s own modelling indicated a peak around April 2.
