Violence, theft and riots: no clear plan for detention centres following attack
Another war of words on the troubles facing the state’s detention centres has been sparked by another assault against a custodial officer.
The female officer was allegedly assaulted with a makeshift weapon before having her keys stolen, leading to what Gary Adshead described as a “rampage” on 6PR Mornings.
Community and Public Sector Union Branch Assistant Secretary Melanie Bray told Gary there has been “critical” understaffing issues at both Banksia Hill and Casuarina Detention Centres for a long time.
“That obviously contributes to a whole range of factors that escalate the environment where detainees may not be able to participate in rehabilitation,” Ms Bray said.

Opposition Corrective Services spokesperson Peter Collier told Gary the government’s approach to the issue was “fatally flawed”.
“It’s not being resolved; in fact it’s getting worse. Day-in and day-out we’re having this situation where you’ve got the lives of prison officers at risk,” Mr Collier said.
