Unusual heatwave to halt speed on Perth trains and continue into weekend

Expect slight delays on trains today as the heatwave sweeping Perth and the state continues due to an unusual trough.
Perth hit a top of 42 yesterday, with 39 forecast today as the heatwave continues into the weekend.
Bureau of Meteorology WA duty forecaster Joey Rawson said an offshore trough from the west coast was preventing the seabreeze coming in early enough to cool things down.
“When the seabreeze comes in, it’s quite late, and it’s quite light, and it’s not really getting too far inland,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.
“So it’s really just holding the seabreeze off, so the temperature just keeps on skyrocketing.

“It’s a bit hotter than normal at the moment, especially the overnight temperatures.”
Temperatures on Friday and Saturday are expected to hit 40 again, dropping slightly to the high 30s after that.
Public Transport Authority spokesperson David Hynes said trains on the network were being slowed across the city due to rail head temperatures rising.
“Whether it’s cold or hot, steel is a metal, it’s out in the open, and it can slightly distort the tracks,” he said.
