Australia’s truck driver shortage is worsening, rising from 10 per cent in 2024 to 12 per cent in 2025, a new report shows.

Road transport and road safety advocate Rod Hannifey told 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that 50 per cent of drivers are over 55, while only 6 per cent are under the age of 25.
“I think we’re going to run out of drivers before the autonomous becomes safe enough to have those vehicles running up and down the highway without somebody in them”, he said.
