Train services down as Rockingham blaze leaves fire crews on high alert

Firefighters are on high alert after a bushfire threatened Rockingham Hospital, businesses and homes in Perth’s south on Thursday.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services incident controller Russell Wells told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast crews worked through the night to consolidate containment lines and save crucial infrastructure and homes, but urged the public to stay aware of conditions.
“The community should remain aware what is happening, particularly with the hot and windy conditions forecast today and tomorrow,” he said.
“It was a close call towards the end of yesterday … air craft were able to thankfully save a lot of properties in Rockingham, and the hospital itself.”
Public Transport Authority spokesperson David Hynes said the blaze forced train cancellations on the Mandurah line between Cockburn and Mandurah on Friday, with replacement bus services in place.
“We’re not looking at trains back there until at least mid-morning… we should be alright for this afternoon’s peak,” he told listeners.
