Carnavon pub owner Merome Beard has become the latest state MP after winning the North West Central by-election for the Nationals.

Ms Beard won the race in the seat that was vacated by former member Vince Catania, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

It means the WA Nationals retain their status as the major opposition party in Western Australia.

Labor didn’t field a candidate.

Ms Beard told 6PR Mornings it’s disappointing they didn’t “front up”.

“There’s a number of things throughout the region, a number of projects and promises that actually haven’t been delivered yet,” she said.

“So there may well be an element of steering away from those things that I’m going to be pushing through.”
