In this year’s Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, a Perth boy has taken out his age category.

Ozi Egesi scored a perfect 30 out of 30 words in just one minute and 32 seconds.

The 11-year-old told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that he credits his mum for encouraging him to read.

“My mum takes me to the library sometimes,” he said.

“Before, she would take me to get ten books and I’d read all of them, and sometimes she’d get spelling tests online to do for me,

“So it’s really her that’s helped me prepare for this.”

Gareth Parker set the listeners out for a challenge on if they could spell at the 5-6-year-old level to go in the running to win a $200 voucher.

It ended with mixed results…
