Synthetic drugs still available

The state opposition claims the Barnett government is being ‘lazy’ in their approach to crack down on synthetic drugs.

South Metropolitan Region MLC Phil Edman sent his staffers to the Careeba Park Newsagency in Rockingham on Monday – and claims they were still able to buy synthetic cannabis over the counter.

Synthetic drugs are banned – however people keep changing the chemical composition – so the legislation keeps changing.

Opposition Corrective Services spokesman Paul Papalia says people who sell or make the drugs – are clearly not scared of the law.

Mental Health Minister Helen Morton says that the government is in the process of banning 33 substances capable of producing a psychoactive effect.
