Yale Primary School in Thornlie will be closed today after a structural fire caused $500,000 damage.

The Arson Squad said a fire in the middle of the school raged through the chaplain room and school computer room, destroying about 20 computers, with significant smoke damage in the staff room.

A witness told police she saw two people running away from the scene just before midnight.

“The Arson Squad were here last night investigating… police have said it’s suspicious. A witness said they saw two people running after they saw flames and smoke last night,” Nine News Perth and 6PR reporter Ashtyn Hiron told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

Education Department schools deputy director Melesha Sands said there was no power at the school and families would be contacted soon.

“Online learning resources are available for students to do at home,” she said.
