Supreme Court appeal decision forces mining company to pay rates, a big win for Mount Magnet

A Supreme Court victory now permits the Shire of Mount Magnet to levy rates on land held by a mining company under miscellaneous licences.

Tralee Cable, CEO of Mount Magnet, clarified to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that, while previous assessments treated the mine site as effectively vacant land, this landmark ruling now accounts for the substantial infrastructure necessary to mine Crown land.
“When you value a piece of land that has that sort of infrastructure on it, the value is much greater,” she said.
