Police have recovered stolen war medals nearly 40 years after they went missing.

Six medals belonging to Chief Petty Officer Laurence Cutts, who served in the Royal Australian Navy, were taken from his home during a break-in at his property in Willougby in NSW in March 1982.

They ended up with a dealer in West Leedervile, where police executed a search warrant and recovered three of the medals and returned them to the family.

Kristen Russell, granddaughter of Mr Cutts, said the recovery means so much to the family.

“My grandfather was away most of my father and his sister’s life,” she said on 6PR Breakfast.

“He used to march every Anzac Day with these medals, and they were everything to him.

“And when they were stolen, my grandmother and him were devastated.”
