WA’s ‘drastic’ fishing reform threatens family-run commercial fishers, Opposition Leader warns
The state has announced important reforms across WA’s coastline, aimed at protecting select demersal fish from extinction and helping stocks recover for future generations.

Dr. Andrew Rowland of CEO of Recfishwest described the new policy as a massive decision.
He stated, “The biggest fisheries reset in WA history and taken some bloody tough decisions here and it’s come as a shock to I think everybody in the fishing sector,” he said.

However, Opposition Leader Basil Zempalis explained to Perth Today host Chrissy Morrissy that while action was necessary, nine years of mismanagement had led to such a drastic response.
“The government’s announcement is going to have a really big impact on family commercial fishing businesses and their staff,” he said.
